4. Verse 3 (T)
Jesus Christus, Gottes Sohn, Jesus Christ is God's own Son,
An unser Statt ist kommen To our abode he cometh
Und hat die Sünde weggetan,
And hath all sin now set aside,
Damit dem Tod genommen Whereby from death is taken
All sein Recht und sein Gewalt, All his rule and all his might;
Da bleibet nichts denn Tods Gestalt, Here bideth nought but death's mere form,
Den Stach'l hat er verloren.

Es war ein wunderlicher Krieg, It was an awesome thing that strife,
Da Tod und Leben rungen, When death and life(1) did wrestle;
Das Leben behielt den Sieg,
And life did the vict'ry win,
Es hat den Tod verschlungen.
For it hath death devoured.
Die Schrift hat verkündigt das, The Scripture foretold it so,(2)
Wie ein Tod den andern fraß, How one death the other ate;
Ein Spott aus dem Tod ist worden. To scorn has now death been given.

Hier ist das rechte Osterlamm,
Here is the spotless Easter lamb,
Davon Gott hat geboten, Whereof God hath commanded;
Das ist hoch an des Kreuzes Stamm It is high on the cross's branch
In heißer Lieb gebraten, In ardent love now burning;
Das Blut zeichnet unsre Tür, The blood signeth now our door,
Das hält der Glaub dem Tode für, Our faith doth it to death display,
Der Würger kann uns nicht mehr schaden. The strangler can now no more harm us.

So feiern wir das hohe Fest So let us keep the great high feast
Mit Herzensfreud und Wonne,
With heartfelt joy and pleasure,
Das uns der Herre scheinen lässt,
Which us the Lord makes manifest;
Er ist selber die Sonne, He is himself the sunlight,
Der durch seiner Gnade Glanz
And through his own shining grace
Erleuchtet unsre Herzen ganz, He filleth all our hearts with light;
Der Sünden Nacht ist verschwunden. The sin-filled night now hath vanished.

Wir essen und leben wohl
We eat now and live indeed
In rechten Osterfladen,
On this true bread of Easter;
Der alte Sauerteig nicht soll The ancient leaven shall not
Sein bei dem Wort der Gnaden, Bide with the word of favor;
Christus will die Koste sein Christ would be our sustenance
Und speisen die Seel allein,
And nourish the soul alone,
Der Glaub will keins andern leben. For faith would on none other live.

1. This and several lines of this hymn have heterodyne meter, i.e., have falsely accented words. Here Leben is accented on the second syllable. Perhaps to correct this a da or das is added after Leben in some parts. Where so, translate: "And life did then the vict'ry win" or "And life, it did the vict'ry win.
2. All parts but the cantus firmus have verkündiget instead of verkündigt. With the former translate: "The Scripture foretold of it so."
