Es ist dir gesagt, Mensch, was gut ist und was der Herr von dir fordert, nämlich: Gottes Wort halten und Liebe üben und demütig sein vor deinem Gott. It hath thee been told, Man, what is good and what the Lord of thee asketh, namely: God's word to hold fast and love to practise, to be humble before this thy God.

Der Höchste lässt mich seinen Willen wissen The Highest lets me know his will and purpose
Und was ihm wohlgefällt; And what him pleaseth well;
Er hat sein Wort zur Richtschnur dargestellt, His word he gave to be a guide for life,
Wornach mein Fuß soll sein geflissen
By which my foot shall be most careful
Allzeit einherzugehn
At all times to proceed
Mit Furcht, mit Demut und mit Liebe
With fear, with rev'rence and with love now
Als Proben des Gehorsams, den ich übe,
As tests of the obedience which I practise,
Um als ein treuer Knecht dereinsten zu bestehn. That I his servant true in days to come be proved.

Weiß ich Gottes Rechte, I know God's true justice,
Was ist's, das mir helfen kann, What it is which me can help
Wenn er mir als seinem Knechte When from me as his own servant
Fordert scharfe Rechnung an. He demands strict reckoning.
Seele, denke dich zu retten, Spirit, ponder thy salvation,
Auf Gehorsam folget Lohn; To obedience comes reward;
Qual und Hohn
Pain and scorn
Drohet deinem Übertreten! Threaten thee in thy transgression!
4. Arioso [Dictum] (B)(2)
Es werden viele zu mir sagen an jenem Tage: Herr, Herr, haben wir nicht in deinem Namen geweissaget, haben wir nicht in deinem Namen Teufel ausgetrieben, haben wir nicht in deinem Namen viel Taten getan?
Denn werde ich ihnen bekennen: Ich habe euch noch nie erkannt, weichet alle von mir, ihr Übeltäter! There will be many who will say unto me on that day: Lord, Lord, have we then not in thine own name been prophesying, have we then not in thine own name been exorcising devils, have we then not in thine own name performed many labors?
Then unto them all shall I say this: I recognize not one of you, get ye all hence from me, ye evildoers.
5. Aria (A)
Wer Gott bekennt Who God doth own
Aus wahrem Herzensgrund, With honest heart's intent
Den will er auch bekennen. Will he in turn acknowledge.(3)
- Denn der muss ewig brennen,
For he shall burn forever
Der einzig mit dem Mund Who merely with the mouth
Ihn Herren nennt. Doth call him Lord.

So wird denn Herz und Mund selbst von mir Richter sein,
Thus will the heart and mouth themselves my judges be,
Und Gott will mir den Lohn nach meinem Sinn erteilen: And God will the reward which I have sought allot me:
Trifft nun mein Wandel nicht nach seinen Worten ein, Should now my conduct his commandments not fulfill,
Wer will hernach der Seelen Schaden heilen?
Who would thereafter heal my soul's misfortune?
Was mach ich mir denn selber Hindernis? Why do I make mine own impediment?
Des Herren Wille muss geschehen, The Lord's desire must be fulfilled,
Doch ist sein Beistand auch gewiss,
But his support is also sure,
Dass er sein Werk durch mich mög wohl vollendet sehen. That he his work through me might see in full accomplished.
