1. Aria [Dictum] (B)

Ich bin ein guter Hirt, ein guter Hirt lässt sein Leben für die Schafe.                                       I am a shepherd true, a shepherd true will give up his life for his sheep.

2. Aria (A)

Jesus ist ein guter Hirt;                                                                                                           Jesus is a shepherd true,
Denn er hat bereits sein Leben                                                                                                For he hath his life already
Für die Schafe hingegeben,                                                                                                     For his sheep now freely given,
Die ihm niemand rauben wird.                                                                                               Which shall no man steal from him.
Jesus ist ein guter Hirt.                                                                                                           Jesus is a shepherd true.

3. Chorale (S)

Der Herr ist mein getreuer Hirt,                                                                                              The Lord my faithful shepherd is,
Dem ich mich ganz vertraue,                                                                                                  Him do I trust entirely,
Zur Weid er mich, sein Schäflein, führt                                                                                   He leads to pasture me, his lamb,
Auf schöner grünen Aue,                                                                                                        To green and lovely meadow,
Zum frischen Wasser leit er mich,                                                                                           To waters fresh he leads me,
Mein Seel zu laben kräftiglich                                                                                                  My soul to nourish with his strength
Durch selig Wort der Gnaden.
And gracious word of blessing.

4. Recit. (T)

Wenn die Mietlinge schlafen,                                                                                                   If e'er the hirelings slumber,
Da wachtet dieser Hirt bei seinen Schafen,                                                                              There watcheth o'er the flock this faithful shepherd,
So dass ein jedes in gewünschter Ruh                                                                                   So that each member in most welcome rest
Die Trift und Weide kann genießen,                                                                                        Enjoyment have of mead and pasture,
In welcher Lebensströme fließen.
In which life's streams are ever flowing.
Denn sucht der Höllenwolf gleich einzudringen,                                                                     For should the wolf of hell strive there to enter,
Die Schafe zu verschlingen,                                                                                                    The sheep for to devour,
So hält ihm dieser Hirt doch seinen Rachen zu.                                                                       Is he by this good shepherd from his wrath restrained.

5. Aria (T)

Seht, was die Liebe tut.                                                                                                           See what his love hath wrought!

Mein Jesus hält in guter Hut
My Jesus holds with kindly care
Die Seinen feste eingeschlossen                                                                                         His flock securely in his keeping
Und hat am Kreuzesstamm vergossen                                                                               And on the cross's branch hath poured out
Für sie sein teures Blut.                                                                                                      For them his precious blood.

6. Chorale (S, A, T, B)

Ist Gott mein Schutz und treuer Hirt,                                                                                     With God my refuge, shepherd true,
Kein Unglück mich berühren wird:                                                                                          No danger will me e'er befall:
Weicht, alle meine Feinde,                                                                                                      Yield, all ye who despise me,
Die ihr mir stiftet Angst und Pein,
All ye who cause me dread and pain,
Es wird zu eurem Schaden sein,                                                                                             It will to your own harm yet lead,
Ich habe Gott zum Freunde.                                                                                                   For God is my companion.
